How to split bamboo stalks for fence battens
In frame number six, the top piece is the thicker of the two. It’s important to check carefully each time a section splits, and to turn the stalk over when proportion changes. Wear sturdy gloves.
Chinese chopping knife and rubber mallet.
Place stalk with curve up and accurately draw horizontal line across end with marker exactly through center. (Not shown) This helps place the knife accurately.
Tap knife with mallet to begin split.
Beginning split must be centered. Tap knife through a couple of sections.
With curves up and down rather than sideways, they may be screwed flat to fence.
